Club History

In 1954, the establishment of Brothers Hockey Club can be attributed to Frank Dowd, who was a member of Christian Brothers Hockey at the time.
Frank approached Brother Cummings to seek permission to initiate our esteemed club. Before this significant development, the Townsville competition had its inception in 1929, taking place at Queens Park in North Ward. It later relocated to Queens Park during World War II and subsequently moved to Cutheringa Park in West End in the early 1970s.
In 1973, the games were relocated once more to Endeavour Park, where they remained until 1989 when the first sand turf was laid at the current facility in Murray.

Brothers Hockey Club initially had two fields and a clubhouse at Pioneer Park starting in 1973. The clubhouse was established in 1975. However, due to the Riverway project, the council facilitated a move in mid-2004.
The club's second relocation was to James Cook University in 2005, where two fields were maintained, and a clubhouse was built. In 2018, the club faced its third move, prompted by the university's expansion plans, to a single field at the Townsville Hockey Association. Here, another clubhouse was established.

In 2026 the committee have committed to powering the club house, to provide a usable facility throughout the year for training, administrative and social events, to improve the sense of community within the Brother's membership.

The year 1966 marked the club's first of many premiership wins. Over the years, numerous club members have risen to represent the state, with some even making it to the national teams and embarking on international journeys to play for Australia.

The introduction of women's hockey in the local scene took place in 1960, and since then, the number of women participating in the sport has surpassed that of the men's teams.
​
In honor of the club's rich history, the Hart family commissioned a book titled "The Family of Hockey," which was published and launched on March 5, 2011, at the Pier restaurant. The event was well-attended by many enthusiastic supporters.
